Laboratory for Studies in Research Evaluation (REV LAB)

The Laboratory for Studies in Research Evaluation (REV Lab) was co-founded in July 2002 by Giovanni Abramo, ever since Head of the Lab, of IASI-CNR and Ciriaco Andrea D’Angelo of the Department of Management of the School of Engineering of the University of Rome Tor Vergata.

Our purpose is to provide policy makers and management with science-based guidelines and tools to improve research productivity and foster public-to-private technology transfer. We realize our purpose by pursuing the following mission: "to consolidate and develop our Italian leadership in research evaluation, through a growing internationalization of our research and consulting activities; to affirm by 2015, our research evaluation support system “ORP” as the common standard in Italy".

Our research goals are the following:

  • Develop bibliometrics indicators and techniques to assess research activities;

  • Carry out measurements of research performance in universities and public research institutions;

  • Provide policy makers and top management with decision support systems to be applied in research evaluation and efficient resource allocation;

  • Provide PhD students with fertile research ground and guidance.

Our main research topics include:

  • large-scale research performance evaluations at the individual, field, discipline and institutional levels;

  • gender aspects in research activities;

  • collaboration behaviors of scientists; public-private collaborations, international, etc.;

  • the scientific specialization of regions;

  • mapping research centres of excellence.
