Research interests
The general objective of the Research Program coordinated by Dr. Farsetti is the integrated and multidisciplinary study to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying the onset of endocrine pathologies and hormone-dependent cancers. Specific interest is to identify mediators involved in the etio-pathogenesis and / or in the clinical evolution of the disease. In particular, the on-going research projects are the following:
1. Genomic and integrated metabolomics analysis on in vitro and ex vivo experimental models consisting of primary immortalized cells or organotypic slice cultures (OSCs) derived from intraoperative biopsies of patients with aggressive and/or metastatic prostate cancer;
2. Characterization of specific molecular pathways responsible for endocrine diseases including pituitary tumors;
3. Pre-clinical studies of functional and applied Epigenetics with a focus on the biological effect of antisense oligonucleotides and / or gapmers aimed at the depletion of lncRNAs such as MALAT1 using the prostate cancer ex vivo model. The working hypothesis is whether these long noncoding RNAs can be used as biomarkers or therapeutic targets finalized at designing innovative Precision Medicine protocols.
