Course configuration in e-learning via automated planning

ABSTRACT
We present a logical framework for course configuration and its implementation based on the programming resources of a planning system. A configuration is the production of a course (on a given teaching topic), by suitably sequencing a subset of the available and related learning components. The resulting course is expected to be a tailored to fit the needs of an individual learner (or of a group of learners, sharing the same knowledge profile). During the configuration, the learning components are picked up from a common pool, in which all the components related to the topic of interest, are supposed to be collected and maintained. The process of configuration is driven by the starting knowledge profile of the learner(s), the target knowledge that the learner is expected to reach, and the relations (mainly propaedeuticy) holding among the various learning components. We establish an analogy between the problem of configuration and that of planning. We then prepare the conceptual and programming machinery, to allow for the implementation of the configuration process as the solution of a planning problem. The reasons for translating configuration into planning are basically twofold: one is the obvious reducibility of configuration to a particular planning problem; then there is the importance of the deductive power available in a planning system, when the number of learning components comes to be just larger than in a toy-pool. In addition, while previewing extensions and developments of the framework, we can confirm how the flexibility of the planner can help in reasoning about future modifications
