A tightly typed data model for object-oriented databases.

ABSTRACT
In this paper the structural component of an Object-Oriented data model is adressed, through the description of a language, TQL, conceived for the type definition. Type definition is the central activity both in database design and database query formulation. The proposed model is characterized by a clear separation between the schema of the database, which consists of a set of types, and data, i.e. objects and classes. Objects are created and manipulated using the language Lobster. The proposed model is strongly typed since: (i) every object must satisfy (at least) one type, (ii) there is a functional correspondence between types and classes. A prototype OODB system based on the two languages TQL, for data definition, and Lobster, for data manipulation, has been implemented. The languages are introduced using a graphic formalism, which illustrates intuitively their main features; successively a formal account of syntax and declarative semantics of TQL is given.
