Performance analysis of the interconnection architecture in a multiprocessor database machine.

ABSTRACT

This paper presents the results of the performance analysis conducted during the early design of the relational database machine DBMAC, which is based on a multiprocessor system. The attention is focused on modelling the data transfer activity between processing units and disk devices, a crucial issue in database systems. A two level hierarchical model based on product form queueing network is defined to derive local and global performance indices. At the lower level the internal operation of the database machine is represented and two interconnection architectures for the communication between processors and disks are modeled and compared. At the higher level an aggregate model is defined to represent the interaction between the database machine and the evironment. Importantly, this study shows how fairly simple and cost effective analytical queueing network models can be used to check and select the architectural choices of a system since the early design stages.
