Towards a unified approach for expert and database systems.

ABSTRACT

This paper adresses the organization of tools for applications that require both the deduction and problem solving capabilities of an expert systems, and the management of a large base of facts, typically kept in a DBMS. In the first part of the paper the principal approaches considered today are summarized: most of these approaches embody database functions in an expert system frame. In the second part we state the criteria required for an "Expert Database System" (EDS) and propose an approach based on database concepts. Such a system must be able to accept knowledge as a new type of objects, to be stored and managed within an expanded database frame. The proposed approach requires that the knowledge be organized with more structure than is usually found in existing systems. To achieve this the concept of a knowledge cluster is introduced and a way of structuring the knowledge similar to the structure of a relational database is suggested.
