Minimizing mean flow time with sequence dependent processing times.

ABSTRACT

A single facility scheduling problem with jobs having the same ready time and sequence dependent processing times is considered. Based on a combinatorial analysis of the problem, an algorithm is developed to obtain an optimal schedule when the mean flow-time has to be minimized. In particula we propose to formulate this problem as a variation of the classical TSP, here denoted as "Cumulative TSP" (CTSP). The corresponding optimization problem is solved by means of an exact algorithm based on a combination of branch and bound and dynamic programming techniques. Computational tests on problems with up to 35 jobs are carried out.
