Operations on distance-hereditary graphs.

ABSTRACT

A set of operations on distance-hereditary graphs is described. Such operations, allow to transform a distance-hereditary graph into a new distance-hereditary graph by adding or deleting edges, and provide further characterizations of this class of graphs. Furthermore, Cunningham's decomposition theory is applied to such graphs by providing the concept of skeleton, which is a (marked) graph associated to the minimal decomposition of a distance-hereditary graph. These skeletons are fully characterized and are proved to be uniquely markable; from this property it follows that a distance-hereditary graph is recoverable starting from its (unique unmarked) skeleton, that the automorphism group of a distance-hereditary graph is that of a tree and, hence, that the isomorphism problem is solvable in polynomial time for these graphs.
