A multiregional multisectorial I-O model for Italy.

ABSTRACT
Recent papers bear evidence of an increasing research effort in multiregional Input-Output modelling with the aim of analyzing the eventually contrasting role of inter-regional trade and production level in determining regional and sectoral disparties. In this paper, we discuss how to build a multi-regional I-O model of the Italian economy by including the results of a recent analysis of the inter-regional trade flows for 1985. The data base constructed on the basis of more than 20 thousand questionnaires distributed over all the Italian regions reveals to be one of the most powerful instruments for analyzing the structure of the regional economies within Italy. Finally, assuming that the inter-regional trade matrices could vary within uniform bounds provided by a sufficiently short time horizon, we discuss how it is possible to achieve an increase of national welfare without affecting the less developed regions. In this paper we report the formulation of a complete inter-regional input-output system and some preliminary results of a project design for reaching planning goals established in terms of production in a given time interval, simultaneously minimizing transportation and investment costs. This results in a non-linear programming problem, whose peculiar structure allows an efficient solution via "dynamic programming".
