Advanced techniques for cadastral maps interpretation

ABSTRACT
Adequate tools to convert information on paper into an interpreted and understandable computer representation are more and more requested in all the apllication fields providing the management of high-level documents. However, currently available facilities only result in simple transformations of the pictural content of the paper and do not address the understanding of the contents. In this paper we focus on a particular class of documents, that is cadastral maps, and we present algorithms and knowledge-based techniques to convert the raster representation of scanned documents into a description of objects, their attributes and their interrelationships. This is an important improvement over existing approaches still limited to little algorithmic support of the user in the conversion phase from raster to vector representation. The overall architecture of a novel multistage approach to document interpretation which uses the described algorithms and knowledge-based techniques is then presented. In this way, starting from a low-level image created using a very primitive drawing package, the classification of the object in the documents is achieved and it is possible to provide, at last, the full document interpretation.
