R&D investment and knowledge stock formation: a cross-country study of innovation and growth

ABSTRACT

The aim of this paper is to focus the qualitative and quantitative process of Knowledge creation. To this aim we propose a dynamic model based on the cumulative effect of Research and Development (R&D) investments and measure the governmental and firms' interdependence degrees among basic, applied and development researches. Further, we focus the specific features of the innovation patterns of seven of the most developed countries in the world: Japan, USA, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, France and italy. To evidence the different national innovation paths we introduce a simulation scheme based on the balanced growth of the accumulated stocks. Numerical outcomes provide the different R&D growth capabilities and structure of each country. The comparison exhibits clusters of countries characterised by common behaviours.
