A system for the evaluation of urban pollution using a geographic information system

ABSTRACT
In this paper the authors propose a system, supported by a GIS, for the prevention of damage to monuments (and to buildings of historical interest) caused by atmospheric pollutants emitted essentially by vehicolar traffic in an urban area. This system is able to build "scenarios of risk" which will allow the user to simulate the environmental conditions around the above mentioned monuments, changing some variables in the simulation, such as to close to traffic (completely or partially) a road or some roads near a given road, or to modify the kind of heating (gas, with a coal fire, etc.) which is in the area near the monument, and so on, in order to evaluate the consequences in terms of pollution variation. Depending on the orographic characteristics of the place, the system will choose a given, predefined "estimation model" of the concentration of pollutants and the obtained result will be used by another model which will estimate the possible damage to the monuments present in that area. Such monuments will be put in suitable "damage classes" which will represent the probable risk which they will have if the hypothesized conditions in the scenario of risk happened. The system also allows the user to define a user dictionary in which to store the data regarding the entities involved in the studied problem.
