DNA Barcode

DNA Barcode is a new challenge in genetics that allows to perform species classification in a more efficient way. A DNA barcode is a subset of loci of a DNA molecule that have the property to be occupied by the same alleles in organisms that belong to the same species and different alleles in organisms of different species (visit www.barcoding.si.edu).

Many problems in barcode analysis can be solved by data mining techniques, like for instance finding barcode for a set of known organisms, shrinking barcodes, find new classes. At IASI the logic techniques of rule based learning have been applied to a data set proposed by dimacs.rutgers.edu and the results have been presented at the EMBO Workshop (slides) on Molecular Biodiversity and DNA Barcode, Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, Rome, 17-19 May, 2007.
